#GivingTuesday

December 1st is #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. It was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Why should you donate to the Voorhees Animal Orphanage? What makes us different than the others?

Well, for starters, we are a small municipal animal shelter that serves 26 towns in southern NJ. As a municipal animal shelter, we are obligated to take in stray and unwanted cats & dogs from the towns that we serve. No matter what their condition may be, we take them. We take in dogs like Hannah. This poor girl arrived at the VAO on Easter day emaciated, exhausted and covered in pressure sores. She guarded her food with such intensity, which was completely understandable for no one knew how long it might have been since she was given a proper meal. We knew that Hannah would have a long road to recovery. But we were there for her, both mentally and physically. The VAO believes in going the extra mile for its animals. We care for the animals that nobody wants, nurse them back to health, socialize them, and love them while they wait for their forever families. Hannah’s transformation was nothing short of miraculous, and she is presently happily living the life she has always deserved with her forever family. We have saved over 33,000 lives since our inception in 1988, and we with your support, we will save even more in the years to come!

Although the VAO serves almost half of Camden County, NJ, we do so without any operational support from the county. We receive no state or federal funding either. Our only income sources are the monthly fees we receive from the municipalities that we serve, along with adoption fees. Otherwise, we rely very heavily upon the generosity of charitable donations to help us meet our budget.
After over 10 years of scrimping, saving, planning and praying, the VAO at long last was able to complete its much-needed new facility. We built it modestly and efficiently, without any fancy bells or whistles. But we are not debt-free. The overall project came in at $1.6 million, of which we still owe $300,000. But we know this was a very important step to take if we were to continue on with our lifesaving mission. We are happy to say that there has been a notable improvement in the overall health of our animals since we have moved into the new building in February. What a difference separate ventilation systems and properly laid-out space makes!
Whether you donate because of Hannah, or donate because you want to help the shelter become mortgage-free, your #GivingTuesday donation will help us save more animals. Period. That’s what the VAO is all about.

If everyone who reads this were to donate just $10 on #GivingTuesday, the impact upon our small but mighty shelter would be astounding. Please be a part of the VAO community and make a donation for #GivingTuesday today.

Hannah, and all of her friends here at the VAO, THANK YOU from the bottoms of our hearts for your support.
