Cats Available at Voorhees Animal Orphanage During “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month”

Influx of kittens expected during peak breeding season

Voorhees Animal Orphanage (VAO) is celebrating “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month” throughout the month of June by encouraging area residents to visit the local community shelter and adopt a “furry friend.”

“Adopting from VAO is a great choice,” said Bill Romaine, Feline Care Manager, VAO. “The cats are already spayed or neutered and have received age-appropriate vaccinations. Plus, most of our cats are ready for a safe home after having been abandoned or living on the street. They’re looking for a loving family.”

Serving 22 municipalities in southern New Jersey, including 16 towns in Camden County, VAO takes in lost or stray cats and kittens, and cats who have been surrendered by their owners. VAO also cares for cats who are transported to the shelter from another state due to overcapacity or safety reasons.

“We don’t give up at VAO. We will always find a solution for the animals that we care for and work our hardest to give them the great lives they deserve,” said Romaine.

Kitten Season

June is not only “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month” – it also marks the height of kitten season, a period between March and August when female cats go into heat and there is an increase in feline breeding.

“Typically, the season runs from March to August, but it’s been running longer every year. I like to call it ‘Christmas time’ because of all the furry presents we receive during this time period,” said Romaine.

Currently, the shelter is caring for a very unusual kitten named Reese – a rare male Calico who is also polydactyl, or has an extra toe, on all four paws.

“He’s one-of-a-kind,” said Romaine. “At VAO, we care for a wide variety of felines that have different medical needs, care requirements and even special features like this kitten. He’s rare, but we’re happy to have him in our care so we can find an owner who will appreciate him.”

During this critical time of the year for cats, VAO encourages community members to get involved through fundraising, adoption or by making a donation to VAO’s $1.6 million capital campaign “Building for Pawsitive Future.”

Donations to the campaign support the construction of VAO’s much-needed new facility. Built on VAO’s existing site on 419 Cooper Road in Voorhees, next to the Voorhees Township Fire Department, the new 8,900 sq. foot facility will be completed in phases to minimize any disruptions to VAO’s furry “residents.” VAO anticipates a new building opening by the end of 2019.
